Family Trait

It’s good while it lasts.

She cannot remember exactly when it struck her: that this dark stranger who was the brother of her once closest friend, that he was different. That it should be sweet torture to watch him, his white teeth sparkling as he smiles, bend over the sword he was making. Strong hands and lean muscles. She looks at him and thinks, hold me and one day, I will have to end you.

It seems to be a family trait, being righteous and glorious and Morgana feels drawn to it, the same way she’s drawn to the blonde silk of Morgause’s hair and the dark current of magic that runs through her, like a cup that is slowly being filled, only just stopping before water spills over the rim.

Hold me, she thinks as he walks right past her, a courteous nod all that greets the ward of the King. Crush me.

It’s all she’s ever wanted and all she’s ever deserved. Morgana, bastard child of Uther Pendragon and, in the end, utterly nothing. The lowest kind of dirt on a workerman’s boot and not even fit for a blacksmith.

It’s with thoughts of death and fire and what Morgause will do to people she used to love, that she goes to him. Pale arms wind around dark shoulders and his hands are rough against her skin.

It’s good while it lasts, even if it doesn’t last long. How could it, when their destinies are on opposite sides of the road?

Crush me, until there is nothing but dust.

She doesn’t stop to wonder, even as it fails. Would you have saved me? She cannot let that interfere. It wasn’t love. It couldn’t be.

Just a small indulgence before the final battle has begun.

Title: Undone,
Author: keep_counting
Theme: theme set 6, #3 - first kiss,
Fandom: Merlin BBC
Pairing:  Merlin/Freya,

Undone

He feels as if he has come undone, as if something is being ripped out of his chest, a bird soaring bright and free from its captivity. Her lips are pressed against his and they taste of bread and magic and too much like the death that has been following her, silent footsteps everywhere she went. I am cursed, she’d told him, desperation and horror in her eyes and it ripped him apart that she was expecting him to flee, to run away as fast he could.

It’s not out of pity: it’s because she’s beautiful, covered in mud and dirt and scrapes, hair mattered and body too thin after days of starvation. It’s because of the blood coating her skin and the way her eyes, haunted as they seem, sparkle when she smiles. It’s the fact that he can make her smile and that the dark, daunt cave feels just a little bit brighter as they laugh together.

“Freya,” Merlin says, her name almost a prayer falling from his lips. She breathes into him and he can feel his heart go silent, stopping in its mad beat. It’s his first kiss and he jealously hopes it’s hers too: he hopes that she will be here forever, his to keep.

There’s a horrid scream and he can feel his heart beating again, uneven rhythm as he realizes, sees, discovers. Something bright and shining is put out and the world is coated in darkness again, creeping around the edges. At night, he dreams of water and a pale corpse in a rocking boat.

Title:  Sweet Poison,
Author: keep_counting
Theme: theme set 6, , #4 - too good to be true,
Fandom: Merlin BBC
Pairing: Merlin/Morgana,

Sweet Poison

She’s pushed him into an alcove in the middle of the halls, a couple of knights standing mere feet away: Merlin has nothing but a split second to think about that, as her mouth settles over his and there is softwarmsoft as their lips press together. Her fingers are tangled in his hair and his arms wind around her narrow waist, rough jacket scraping over the expensive silk of her dress. Her tongue darts out to prod at his lower lip and he’s actually not that surprised that she’s the one who has taken so complete control: it is Morgana after all.

She pulls away and there’s an odd mix of hurt and anger in her face and he wonders if he’s done something, before she chokes, gasping for breath and he can taste hemlock.

“You poisoned me!”

Merlin wakes, his eyes shooting open and blinking at the dark ceiling. He feels crushed, as if someone has placed a boulder on his chest and his hands are clammy. He should have known it was a dream, but these days , ever since Morgana’s disappearance, all it has ever been are nightmares and this dream…

This is a dream that he used to have when she was still kind and smiling and undeniably theirs. He wonders if that’s excuse enough, as he gets up for another sleepless night, still tasting poison on his tongue.

Title: Faith
Author: keep_counting
Theme: theme set 6, #5 - rescue me
Fandom: Merlin BBC
Pairing: Lancelot/Elaine

Faith

”It can’t be easy.” Elaine’s eyes are far too wise for someone her age and she’s managed to sneak up on him, distracted as he was by… other things.

“What?” Lancelot mutters, fingers twisting in and out of each other. “I’m sorry… did you say something My Lady?” Mustn’t fidget: she’s royalty, he can’t…

Elaine smiles and it’s breathtaking.

“I was saying, it cannot be easy, to be the son the son of a commoner and a Knight of Camelot at the same time,” She repeats, patience in her voice. “You are very brave.”

“Thank-you My Lady.”

“You can call me Elaine.”

“Thank-you Elaine.”

She smiles again, mischievous this time and he wonders why she’s wasting her time talking to him when there are so many other things she could do, so many other people more fit for her company. He almost tells her, but that would be rude and, to be honest, he doesn’t want her to go.

“But you must command a lot of respect with the other Knights,” She says. “You’ve had to work harder than them, just because you weren’t lucky enough to be born with a title.”

“I don’t know, My La… Elaine, if one can… can put it that way.” He’s not denying that burst of pride, the happiness that she thinks that way, but he doesn’t want to come off as an arrogant fool and so he isn’t quite sure what to say.

“Well, if anything ever happened…” Elaine trails off, letting her word hang in the air as she looks him directly in the eye, pale hair and skin shining in the sunlight. “I know who I’d want to come rescue me.”

She leaves him dazzled and short of breath in the field and Lancelot wonders if it would be socially acceptable for him to give chase and kiss her right then and there.
