I always love seeing RA's take on his character. It's almost more canon to me what he says, than what the writers do. And there def. were, there is a great difference between the Sheriff's sadistic tendencies and Guy's. You can always see who enjoys it the most.
I like your take on it as a 'mask' he wears. I agree, it's like a shield and it is not that uncommen. He's had a hard life, so it isn't weird at all that he should grow up to be a 'bully', especially with a role-model like Vasey. Poor Guy!
