I can see how it might throw you off, but it was meant to be sudden. I was partly trying to keep with the show, who jumps between adventures and making the transition startling for the reader, so that Nine's actions would make more sense: he, as well as the reader, genuinly believes that Rose is going to die, and it's both a relief and a bit of a shock when she doesn't. But thank-you for your thoughts, I'll keep it in mind :)
