Review of episode 1x02 of HBO's Game of Thrones.

Contains spoilers for the rest of the series as well, plus comparisons to the book, pic-spams and general flailing over all the pretty. I am currently at the start of A Storm of Swords so only spoilers up to that point.

I'd like to start this one out with proclaiming my love for the Dany/Jorah ship. Yes, I like Drogo and I think his and Dany's relationship is an important and exciting part of the journey Daenerys takes, but at the end of the day, I just want Dany and Jorah to be together and have extremely attractive babies. Okay? Okay.

THIS SCENE! One of the best in ever! Tyrion waking up in the stables. The Hound being all swag in the background. Joffrey getting bitch-slapped. JOFFREY GETTING BITCH-SLAPPED! Angels sing hallelujah every time that happens!

I also really like the actors they've picked out to play Myrcella and Tommen. Neither of them have very important roles this far, at least not in themselves, but its nice that the showmakers have thought far enough ahead to make sensible casting choices for someone who might become more important later on.

Catelyn! Sitting with Bran. I remember in the book being so frustrated at how broken and listless she became, how much of a shell of a person. I don't have any children, but I have people who I love dearly: I always got so frustrated with her in this part, because she has Rickon to take care of as well. But it's a good thing that she can frustrate me so much, because it makes her seem so real that I only love her more.

Our first glimpse of Needle, yay! :D

Jaime continues to be all weird and getting into peoples personal space. I think he seriously just wants some Stark-action (and who can blame him?), and seeing as Ned wasn't receptive, he's just going after another (see review of 1x01)

Jon is just all confused

I always wanted an older brother (who would get me a kickass-sword) but I never had one: I am very jealous of Jon and Arya's relationship

Everything is just angst and family versus duty and Bran is never going to see his father again and and... *sobs*

More hugging and sad goodbyes:

'The next time we see each other, we're going to talk about your mother...' Haha, fooled you! I'm going to go to King's Landing and get myself beheaded now, and you will never know who she was! NEVER.

Ned, you are such a dweeb

This face was made for pouting:

I remember this part in the books being where I really started to like Tyrion, when he's all sarcastically comforting to Jon. I still love the line: 'Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.' It's good advice, actually, especially in our world that is so 'civilized' and yet still full of so much bigotry its absolutely suffocating. You know how people have a sassy gay friend? I want Tyrion to be my sarcastic sassy dwarf friend. The world would not recover from all the snark.

'You're not supposed to be here. No-ones supposed to be here' .That line and the look on the assassins face still freaks me out every time I watch it. FYI, this is where I started to absolutely love Cat. It's the same reason I love Katniss from THG: they would do anything, anything to protect those they love and feel responsible for. Also, since I am still fascinated with the warg-storyline, have some Summer/Brandon

And because this post doesn't have enough Daenerys, here's a pretty shot from another of my favorite scenes:

Beautiful shot 26487:

This scene is amazingly beautiful as well. First I was all WTF? at having them move this whole conversation to the Godswood (and why was Theon there? I'm pretty sure he wasn't in the book, but I could be wrong), but it makes for some awesome scenery.

Obligatory sexy-shot. I ship it a little bit. But then again, I ship Dany with practically everyone (but mostly with Jorah), she's so shippable.

But to be serious again, I really like this whole sequence of Dany tentatively finding ways of getting more control, of adapting to her situation and getting the best out of it. While I'm tired of the whole, 'woman finding power through her sexuality' thing, this is a society where it  is one of the only ways a woman can gain any sort of power and it is such a huge step for Dany, finally standing a bit up to Drogo. You can practically see the moment he's thinking damn, I'm in love.

The Hound! I love The Hound as well. He's one of the characters I really wish we would get a POV from in one of the later books (it wouldn't get fit in before at least the third I think, but around now would be nice!). He's a bit like the part of me that loathes everything, especially all the conventional - I love how he absolutely refuses to be a knight or anything like it, because in his experiences, titles mean nothing: they don't stop cruelty and hate, it's just empty words. Another reason why him and Sansa are so perfect together, as a ship or just awkward friends/partners-in-despair, because she is so innocent and proper at the start, and I think he yearns for that, what he never had, while her slowly understanding him and even respecting him is a huge step in growing up and starting to drop the illusion of the brave Prince who will save her from the evil monsters.

Also, Ser Ilyn Payne looks like he's constipated. But then again, if I'd had my tongue ripped out, I don't think I would look very happy either

I love this episode because Joffrey gets beat up so much. Slapped by his uncle (twice!), bitten by a wolf and otherwise just getting his ass kicked by a little girl. This series is so bleak and unfair, its nice when there's some proper karma going on:

But then of course, all the injustice comes back, and Arya has to say goodbye to Nymeria in another scene that breaks my heart:

You know from the start, that when they find the wolves for the children, the wolves are going to be massively important for the Stark-storyline. And then to have one of them be killed so early on.. it was a big shock, and perhaps the first warning from Martin: don't get too comfortable. Don't think you know what's coming. Don't think you even have a clue. The biggest of these moments is of course Ned's execution, which I doubt a lot of people saw coming on the first read/watch, but really, this was the foreshadowing and lead-up to this. It was GRRM pointing and crackling saying 'This world is unfair and the good, honest, brave characters won't last.' Oh my god, everyone is going to just die, aren't they???? *is not prepared*

Lady's death was a huge blow. For future events as well. The person who maybe needs her wolf-protector the most - considering both her early, self-appointed damsel-in-distress role and her later captivity in the lions den - has now lost it. Sansa is a warg without her other skin, and that cannot be a good thing. Second episode, people. And already they are crushing our hearts
