Doctor Who 7x02 - Dinosaurs on a Spaceship
Sep. 9th, 2012 04:59 pmPoint-time!
THE GOOD:
- Let's just get this straight out of the way; +20 points for Arthur Weasley being there. +5 extra just because he's Rory's dad. +20 for Nefertiri being there. And +20 for MR GREG 'IT'S NOT MY DIVISION' LESTRADE!
- I also have to give +10 for the dinosaurs. Look, I can't not do this guys! I've loved Jurassic Park since I was little, no matter how crap they might be. It's dinosaurs!
- Riddell's accent is sexy as all hell. I'm an accent kind of gal, okay? +5
- +5 for casting one of the most beautiful people ever to play the Queen of Egypt. My brain can't handle all the pretty!
- The Doctor has a christmas list. +5 because this idea pleases me greatly. And then I got to thinking and... what's on it? And I thought it's probably, I mean, really sad things. Like, 'Happiness for Donna'. 'Small annoying children for Martha and Mickey'. And I got all depressed thinking about it.
- 'Gang, I've got a gang!' I'm going to count this as a call-back to School Reunion. +5
- Rory has the sensible questions this time! +5
- 'Is that a kestrel?' - ' I do hope so...' +10 for the delivery of those lines
- Amy going all fangirl on Neffie. For once I was right there with you Amy! +10
- 'Are you also a Queen?' - '... Yes. Yes I am' +100!!!
- A spaceship powered by waves. We've had oxygen-factories, but we've never had waves. +5, because the environmentalist inside me is clapping.
- The robots from The Fifth Element (or, well, they were aliens there, whatever) have gotten new employment! And they're very cross with us all! +10 for reminding me of my favorite movie of all time!
- (this episode is earning some serious points...)
- 'Please don't start flirting. I can't have flirting companions..' +5 for this line. +10 for Doctor!Amy - almost as sassy as Doctor!Donna
- Riddell was a sexist pain-in-the-arse and you know what? That's alright, because our girls didn't take it. I want to award a point for each and every female!power line they smacked in his face. That's, what, like 30 points? +30 FOR FINALLY DOING THIS SHIT RIGHT!
- Mr Filch! It's a HP-reunion! +5
- I was going to take points away because Solomon was all 'did he say Doctor?' and I thought, 'jesus christ, it's going to be another story about someone whose heard of the doctor and wants his talents blabla', but he wasn't looking for the Doctor, he was looking for a doctor and it was such a pleasant surprise. +5
- Nurse!Rory. Always a pleasure to see you. +10
- Of course you're going to ride the dino. YES! THIS IS EXACTLY THE ONE THING JURASSIC PARK WAS LACKING, DINO-RIDING YESYESYES I HAVE BEEN MISSING THIS FOR ALL MY LIFE UNTIL THIS POINT, HOW HAVE I SURVIVED?? +20
- Stun-guns! because killing the cute (albeit kinda bloodthirsty) dino's are not okay. Speaking of that, what do the dinos eat? Just each other? What about the herbivores?? I'm not going to go into that. +10 for being kinder to animals, thank-you
- I'm Rory's Queen... Rory's wife. I'm not his Queen. Please don't tell him I said I was his Queen'. +5 because I want that conversation to happen
- 'Human sleeping potion or walking innuendo?' I'd take Lestrade anyday. Especially with that accent, though we'd need to talk about his general attitude. +5
- Rory's face when the Doctor kisses him is PRICELESS. +10
- Metal tantrum-machines! This is what my mom calls her car. +5
- Every single scene with Brian Williams/Pond was amazing, so.. let's just say +10 points and leave it there. Especially him figuring out the gene-chain thing. And piloting the spaceship with Rory. And just wanting to see the Earth from space.
- 'I'm easily worth two men. You can help too if you like.' I know I already gave badass-female points for all of it, but this deserves an extra mention and some extra points. +5. You go Amy
- +10 for Nefertiri kicking ass in the end! HOW AMAZING IS THAT WOMAN?
(points: 380) (omg! wow. this could have easily gotten more. I've forgotten some things, I'm sure...)
THE BAD:
- ... uh...
- Spiders in space. Is there nowhere I can escape? I'm only going to take -1 away, because its my ridicolous phobia
- How did Amy, Neffie and Riddell not notice that T-Rex earlier? -10 for being unrealistic just for dramatic effect. It was snoring and everything
- Speaking of dinos, yes, shine a light in it's face. That's going to make it go away (incidentally, it did make it go away, but I'm taking away points anyway, because it was stupid) -5
- How many times are Chibnall going to mass-murder the Silurians? I think they have enough of a tough time already. Can we please bring Madame Vastra back? -10
- Solomon was absolutely horrific. That is not a bad thing, but... it felt too much for something that's supposed to be a kids show? I mean, of all the human villains we've had, he's got to be the worst. C'mon, he'd practically walked right out of a Guillermo del Toro film! I despise the Captain in Pan's Labyrinth more than I hate Voldemort, but I am even more repulsed by this man. I cannot shed a tear for the Doctor ending him, I honestly can't. It was the only way to get the missiles away in time, and the easiest way to stop him. Does that mean it was morally right? Absolutely not. It was very, very wrong, and I am going to take away 5 points for it, including the fact that I think this character might have scarred some children for life. He surely nearly did me in! -5 (this was tricky, because I enjoyed him as a villain, but I feel like I had to take some points away for random killing)
- Speaking of random killing... -20 points for killing the dino! Not cool, dude, not cool!
- 'I don't respond well to violence'. This line didn't really sit well with me. It's very much 'Doctor', but... his behavior these last few seasons has been so erratic, that I just don't know. -5 for reminding me of a time when the Doctor really was more peaceful, and making me miss that.
- Why didn't Amy and Rory call each other right at the start? They've been seperated, they don't know if the others okay - it should have been their first course of action. -10
- 'No identification found', so has everyone in the entire universe forgot about the Doctor? I'm confused, and I want this to make sense and its not. -10
- The Doctor's and Amy's conversation however... I thought this had all been settled? I get that they wanted the Pond's back for another season but... the whole 'waiting'-theme has become so redundant now, and frankly, I'm bored of it. Amy needs to let go and the Doctor needs to let her. -10
Points for this episode: 284. Such a step-up from last week!
Points for the season: 224... yes, I am surprised as well. I really enjoyed this ep guys... next week is not looking as good, however. I'm hanging on to the fact that there's cowboys. Cowboys please me.

Date: 2012-09-09 04:11 pm (UTC)I agree with pretty much everything, except I didn't like the actress who played Nefertiti, so I couldn't squee about her; but the girl-power vibe was good, especially because it didn't mean degrading the boys, and they got to be awesome as well. That's how I want it.
Doctor!Amy was awesome and so was almost everything else about that ep actually because: THAT CAST! Also: fun and well written and everything Moffat fails to do on a regular basis (I did like Asylum, but this one had much better dialogue).
Mark Williams as Brian. ♥
I thought Riddell was interesting. He was bound to be sexist at first because of where and when he came from, but he didn't take that long to start respecting the girls, in retrospect. I really liked that. Also: sexiness. I never found Rupert Graves as sexy as with the Indiana Jones hat. *facepalm*

I have a bad story-arc feeling about this :/

This so much! Everyone got an important and badass role to play. Rory and his dad saved the day; Amy took charge when the Doctor had gone; Nefertiti kicked Solomon's ass; Riddell got to stun some dinosaurs; and the Doctor was the Doctor as always. Everyone was on such equal ground and it felt fantastic.
I really liked Riddell's small 'evolution' of character as well. He is clearly surprised when Amy says she'll help, but he doesn't protest. And then he hooks up with Neffie in the end - a part of me is going 'what about history?' because I can't remember how she died. But she's a pretty prominent figure! Shouldn't she be back in her own time?
I have a bad story-arc feeling about this :/
Me too. My Moffat-senses are tingling...

'Moffat-senses' is so accurate, it's actually the way it feels when I watch his eps now :)
there are no mentions of her after that date, not of remaints found or a burial or anything, so her staying with Riddell works ;)

I'm not the only one who thought that!! THEY ARE THE FITFH ELEMENT ROBOTS!

I second this motion!!
I'd say more but I might be here forever if I do that :P

'No identification found', so has everyone in the entire universe forgot about the Doctor? I'm confused, and I want this to make sense and its not.
That actually kind of reminded me of the moment in End of the World when Jabe scans the Doctor and has trouble identifying him, just because he's a Time Lord and supposed to be extinct.
Loved this episode. Off to watch it again, now.

But at least we had context back then. Is the Doctor gone from all databases? Does he yet again only exists in myths and hushed whispers like before, as opposed to the universal symbol he was turned into in s5-6?

Date: 2012-09-10 07:05 pm (UTC)I think that might be what they're going for. Like last week, with the Dalek woman's voiceover at the beginning of the episode, something about "he died, but some still believe he lives."

Date: 2012-09-10 03:24 am (UTC)Also, why didn't Arthur Weasley/Brian Williams not ask what exactly the function of a Sonic Screwdriver was? (that would have gotten +1000 from me)
And I wasn't the only one who fangirled over the Harry Potter-ness of the episode? Good.
I really enjoyed this episode, clearly. It was everything the last episode wasn't, with all the female ass-kicking and not only being a thing that creates children. (Why do I feel like this has to do with Moffat not writing the episode?) I was a bit confused by Solomon's database not knowing who the Doctor was, but perhaps he got it from the Daleks, and the Daleks don't know who the Doctor is anymore, apparently. I loved Nefertiti and
LestradeRiddell and all their flirting. The Rory/Doctor kiss was wonderfully hilarious. And I'm really glad they did it on a kid's show, personally, because it felt like a completely normal Doctor thing to do, kissing brilliant people when they're being brilliant, and I just love that. I know they did it with Jack and 10 a while back, too, but I just love when they just put that in, a normal kiss, but between two guys. (This is what happens when I watch too much American, blatantly heterosexual television.) Anyway, so yeah. Great episode.I'm not sure about next episode, though, probably because the Doctor seems to be shooting a gun, and he is supposed to be the one who never carries or uses a gun. Hopefully River comes in and uses the gun instead, or something, so that we can acknowledge River's existence again.

That would have been great! And a fun call-back; I want more banter around the sonic. It's mainly just been used as a tool for a while. I want some new jokes about it now.
(Why do I feel like this has to do with Moffat not writing the episode?)
I'm trying to keep back on the Moffat-bashing, because I can get reallyreally angry at this man, but *whispers* yesyesyesyes!!
The Rory/Doctor kiss was wonderfully hilarious. And I'm really glad they did it on a kid's show,
Everything you just wrote about the kiss! It was played as such a normal Doctor-thing to do, and it was so beautiful. But when did Ten kiss Jack? I thought Jack only kissed Nine? I know that Tennant and Barrowman have snogged on at least one occation, but I can't remember Ten and Jack kissing on the show? (how could I have forgotten that??)
If the Doctor actually goes on a roaring, gun-shooting rampage next episode, I feel the season will loose all points gained by this one :/

Date: 2012-09-11 03:00 am (UTC)My issue with Moffat is that he is such a brilliant writer when it comes to Sherlock, and with Doctor Who, he's just been confusing and annoying. I love his and Mark Gatiss's work on Sherlock and I just wish some of that brilliance translated onto Doctor Who.
And I have so many feels over the kissing you have no idea. The first time I ever saw a boy kissing a boy on television was on Glee, and they made such a huge deal about it being THE gay kiss, or whatever. Although I was happy that the kiss happened, I don't think it should have been nearly as big a deal as it was. Then I see things like this, where it's just normal, everyday behavior of a character and there is no drama pomp or circumstance about it. It's just the same as if Rory and Amy kissed or if Rose and Mickey kissed. And the fact that it's on a family/children's show makes it even better, because it makes it even more mundane and normal. It's not targeted toward the teen set or the adult set who already have their beliefs. So yeah. Feels feels feels

Date: 2012-09-11 04:19 pm (UTC)I wasn't overtly fond of Moff's potrayal of Irene in 'A Scandal in Belgravia', but after rewatching it a while and a lot of discussions, I still found it muchmuch better than the way he generally potrays woman on for example Doctor Who. Their main work with Sherlock is epic though, and I think it has a lot to do with the sandboxes they play in - with Doctor Who, they're allowed to jump the shark (because the show has always done that a lot), but Moff's just not doing it right (imo, the River-storyline is... well, a two-year old could write a better storyline), and so it becomes even more unbelievable. Add the misogyny to that, and you have a very displeased keep_counting sitting here (:
EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID ABOUT THE GAY KISSING! I remember watching Buffy and having to wait more than a whole season before they actually showed the gay couples kiss on-screen. That was a while ago as well, though, but when it happened it was so natural and sweet and perfect. The world needs more of that in general, because imo that's the first start to acceptance: discovering something in your every-day life as something that happens, to your neighbours, your best friends, maybe even you. I went this flaily over Captain Jack as well :D
