Once Upon a Time 2x07 - Child of the Moon
Nov. 12th, 2012 07:52 pmYou know what? I ask this show to deliver. And then it does.
- Meghan Ory is actually quite talented. She's showed her worth already in 'Red-Handed', but this allowed her to go with a lot of different aspects. We get to see Red right after her killing Peter, and how vulnerable she is, as opposed to the confident lady we see her as under the curse. And back in Storybrooke, Ruby is torn up and tormented, but also so very determined.
- Some parts of the episode felt a bit off, but I think that is mainly because we don't have all of the story: I expect we'll see some background and Red telling Granny off for lying to her about the whole parents-not-being-dead thing, because JESUS WOMAN. Isn't it enough that you keep it from her she's a bloodthirsty beast three nights of the month? Not to mention she is now responsible for both her True Loves and her mother's death and OHMYGOD RUBY YOU JUST CAN'T CATCH A BREAK PLEASE COME OVER HERE AND LET ME GIVE YOU A HUG! These things are major factors in her decision to tie up Belle and escape to face the crowd, because... well, as she says. Doesn't she have it coming? She's killed people.
- And yes, it does make a difference that she didn't kill Billy. Not only in the whole 'set-up' thing, but also because this proves that she can manage her condition, and while I wouldn't recommend any of the villagers go up and poke at her while she's transformed, it also means she is no more a danger to the town than some tired person behind the wheel of a car. And with crazies like King George, she is definitely not what they need to fear much.
- Speaking of Georgie-boy CAN I PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE??? And how much did I love that there was alluded to MAJOR CHARMING/GEORGE BATTLE-OFF IN FTL?? We get to see that right??? I WANT SWORD-FIGHTING! GIVE ME SWORD-FIGHTING!
- Also, damn you for burning the hat. JEFFERSON'S BEAUTIFUL HAT! NOT OKAY GEORGE! God. You really are a bastard.
- Belle and Ruby continue to have an awesome relationship - and Belle continues being awesome in general. But I'd like to focus on Red and Snow first, because... guh. I had to do an essay on the Grimm fairytale Snow-White and Rose-Red and I am SO HAPPY that the writers decided to make these characters practically sisters, like in that story. It works so well, and Ginnifer and Meghan have a great dynamic. They both play the younger, softer version of their characters so well, and it is breaking my heart.
- Everything in this episode is just breaking my heart. Billy :( Quinn, who was annoying but pretty :( Ruby's mom! (whose name I've already forgotten, but... oh well)
- Someone mentioned in the last review that Henry and Aurora was probably seeing each other with the whole 'he's... she's' thing AND POINTS FOR YOU. Also points for me for correctly guessing that it had to do with the sleeping curse. Let's ignore that that one was kinda obvious BECAUSE I WANT SOME POINTS.
- Finally FINALLY some Henry/Regina interaction. I am dancing in joy. It's not the heart-to-heart and sweetness that I want, but it was Regina taking care of and looking over Henry... and asking Mr. Gold for help instead of taking care of the clearly magical problem herself... I'm so proud of you Regina, you're making my heart burst. I'm giving you a standing ovation!
- I'm going to believe Gold when he says that helping Henry is for free this time, because while we should suspect EVERYTHING that happens on this show, he does sort of maybe owe Henry, because our little kid played a huge part in breaking the curse and everything. Also, Gold is also trying to become a better person, to become someone that deserves Belle and someone that deserves to get his son back, and refusing to help a scared, little boy is definitely not the way to go. I'm proud of you as well, Rumple!
- Granny CONTINUES TO BE FUCKING AWESOME. Yeah, there's been some asshattery along the way (what? that's a real term. it is), but then she wields a crossbow like a badass, and suddenly I can forgive her (even if it is another person taking someone's choices away from them for their own good, BUT it is not as extreme as certain other people *cough*Maurice*cough*Cora*cough*, and she's wised up a lot later and LEARNED FROM HER MISTAKES instead of continuing down the path of Assholeness). 'The next one goes between your eyes.' Can you move in with me please?
- Charming/David continues to grow on me. He screws up, but he's gotten on the right track and he is such an amazing friend to Ruby here. I'm a firm believer in the whole 'innocent until proven guilty', and in this world of magical enchantments and people with some serious grudges, nothing is as it seems: he's learned from not believing in Mary Margaret and I AM SO PROUD OF HIM. GOSH, Y'ALL, I JUST LOVE YOU SO MUCH THIS EPISODE!!
- ... Okay, there was maybe one point where I thought Ruby was going to die. When the mob advanced on her (and, like, the wolf has killed a dozen armed guards like it was nothing before WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA GEORGE WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID GEORGE??), I got so scared. When the scene with David walking towards her kept going so slow, and she was growling at him and... I've clearly just stopped expecting good things. Ruby, I'm so glad you're not dead.
- Has Henry grown? He's become bigger. Gosh, maybe by the end of this season he'll have a deep voice and everything. Or maybe next season. IT WILL BE WEIRD EITHER WAY. You're not allowed to grow up!
- THANK-YOU FOR THIS EPISODE IT WAS REALLY NICE SHOW! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go hug me some characters. I've build up quite the list.

Date: 2012-11-14 01:04 pm (UTC)I agree, it was 'weaker' than a lot of what we've seen this far - I was mostly distracted by the very bad CGI in some of the wolf-scenes, which is also annoying because I usually don't mind that much. And I think I like Ory's acting so much because I thought she was kind of blah in the very first few episodes, before her character got more layers and everything. But I wasn't too psyched on the actor they'd picked for Ruby's mother - I mean, she wasn't awful, but I just didn't really feel anything much? I wasn't even that sad when she died (only sad for Ruby - and it might also have something to do with the fact that she'd just almost eaten Snow AND YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE SNOWY-WOWY LEAVE HER ALONE!)
I'm so glad you enjoyed David too! I see him getting so much crap for his actions this episode, but I keep feel like he's acting very... Emma, actually. He's doing stuff that I could imagine her doing as well, back when she was Sheriff, and I'm loving it.
And ssssh, the sleeping-curse thing was not obvious, let me have my joy that I correctly guessed something! xD
I do think Gold has a soft spot for Henry - possibly for children in general, we've just only seen him interact with Henry - and there's something extra with our little boy wonder, because of everything Henry has been through, and his part in breaking the curse. I also loved how Gold doesn't say 'oh, this is for free', because magic always comes with a price, he says 'this ones on me' - whatever price there is, Gold will pay it. For Henry. And unless there's an ulterior motive (and I really don't think there is this time), then that is just so sweet of him, and such a huge step.

Date: 2012-11-15 07:03 pm (UTC)The CGI is one of the things that bug me the most about the show, tbh. It's not very good, and I'm afraid it will look ridiculous in a few years time. I mean, you can tell where the green screen was :/ Actually I really liked Ory's scenes in 2.4 for example, but in this ep, and particularly as Red, I thought the way she said her lines was over-the-top and nearly ridiculous. It's a shame. I enjoyed the 'Ruby' scenes more actually :)
Well, what did he do wrong? True, he was very Emma-like, so I can't blame them when they screw up, because they're trying to do right by people. I'm really enjoying Sheriff!David and most of all his relationship with Henry.
Lol, okay then ;) Can't wait to see where the dream storyline is going!
Ooh, that is so true and I didn't spot it at all! He's going to pay the price himself, that's a big step indeed. 'This one's on me'...Gah, it could be anything!
(I'm re-watching various eps and realising there are still many loose ends from S1 and things we don't know etc. It's not often that I see an American show that doesn't apologize about being a bit complicated. Hence all the good feelings about it :))

Date: 2012-11-16 03:41 pm (UTC)It's especially glaring when so many other shows are doing the CGI very well - and if they don't have budget for it, they use other methods that work just as well, and looks very cool. Red in wolf-form from S1 looked very cool, so this episode was very much of a let-down in regards to that. Also, the wolves looked smaller?? Maybe it was just in size to each other, since last time we saw it, Ruby looked pretty massive compared to Peter.
There's apparantly a general consensus that David was only going for his own interest when he was helping Ruby - and it bugs me, because its exactly what Emma did with Mary Margaret as well, and if he hadn't supported Ruby like he had, people would be calling him out on that instead (+ he wouldn't be the Charming we know at all. It would be extremely OOC and not very good-guy like of him). Okay, rambling now. But its getting to me! I wanted to punch David Nolan in the face as well for msot of last season, but he is just human people!
I rewatched 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' last night and OMG, Graham gives Snow a whistle that can call for help when she needs it AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN HER USE IT AT ALL! If they've just dropped this plot-point I will be very dissapointed. I want surprise!whistle in one of the next episodes. In fact, I demand it.

Date: 2012-11-17 06:44 pm (UTC)Yup, even in Sanctuary, where the budget was really small, the CGI looked better. And yes, the wolf was bigger in S1...
Really? I didn't interpret it like that at all, I think he was genuinely trying to help, that's all. And I disagree when people say they made Ruby's ep all about David. I think it was very much Ruby's ep, even if other characters got a bit of development in the process.
Omg, I'd forgotten about that! Every time I re-watch an episode I remember something different. Lol, let's campaign for the whistle's comeback :P

Date: 2012-11-19 02:47 pm (UTC)That's how I saw it as well. And honestly, I would rather have the plots interwoven, instead of something completely random and unrelated happening to Ruby, for the sake of having a Ruby-ep. This way it fits with the rest of the plot - season 2 has been much more plot-driven than season 1, because a huge part of the major backstory is out of the way, and everyone remembers now that the curse is broken, and are therefore taking a much more active part in what's happening. Plus, I'd almost completely forgotten about creeper!George watching David teach Henry to swordfight, so it was nice seeing that particular plot-point being dealt with.
There are so many things! Also, is Sydney still in the asylum?... Can someone please let Sydney out? O.o

Date: 2012-11-19 04:52 pm (UTC)Exactly. I just re-watched 1.8, and while it was Rumple-centered, everyone had scenes. I don't see why that should be a problem, that doesn't make it any less about the person the episode is about.
Omg, yes, I miss Sidney! And everyone seems to have forgotten about him :/ No episode this week, boo, I need my fix!

Date: 2012-11-20 06:54 pm (UTC)Well, I was watching the promo and saw the date and I went all 'Nooo', lol. I hate ABC for that, something they stop airing for three weeks or more, they did that all the time with Desperate Housewives.
Yes, I watched that. Also, what's with the mid-season break thing? I read about that on Tumblr, but I didn't really get it. Are they splitting the season in two?no subject
Date: 2012-11-21 02:52 pm (UTC)Lol, no judging with the Desperate Housewives thing - my guilty pleasure is currently american vampire shows that are only better than Twilight because they have fabolous villains. And they're doing a mid-season break? Why didn't I know that? WHAAA NO!!!

Date: 2012-11-22 03:18 pm (UTC)babyvillain shows up xDYeah, I read that I think episode 9 will be Belle-centric! Which we really need, because all the episodes that have focused on her have been about her relationship with Rumple - and while I definitely want to see more of that, I also want Belle being awesome on her own (which she has had a lot of time to do as well, but a whole episode of that...)

Date: 2012-11-22 07:59 pm (UTC)Yay! Definitely, I was so glad she had Rumple-less scenes in the last episode, she needs a chance to become more than just his love interest - which is already the case, but yeah, watching her interact with other characters will be fun :)
I need Rumple/Gold scenes, though, I've started stalking Carlyle's work on YT, it's getting badno subject
Date: 2012-11-23 03:02 pm (UTC)Her friendship with Ruby is turning out to be everything I dreamed it would be. They compliment each other as characters a lot; they're both very very loyal, and very very brave. But I miss Rumple/Gold scenes as well! I rewatched 'The Shepherd' the other day, and guh... I just want to sit down and write page after page on his different behavior towards different people, different moments in his life, what he wants in that moment, how much he hates himself, how different the scenes are when you have more of his backstory... If I hadn't already picked a subject for my major, I would try to convince my teacher that this should be it xD

Date: 2012-11-23 09:15 pm (UTC)I very much agree, I wanted it to happen and it did! It's like, so far, this show is really trying to make me happy!
Omg yes, I want a degree in Rumple/Gold. I could write essays about the guy, that would be less of a problem than writing my actual essays... Actually, I want a degree in tv shows knowledge, majoring in villains and minoring in shipping doomed pairings. How about that? :P
