Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action) And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA.  And tell them why you're buying their products in March.  There are many of them.

Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012
With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists.
The only way is to hit them where it hurts.
Their profit margins.
March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide.
Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.
Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent:
"We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."

Hmm...it's a thought, particularly for those of us outside the US who are wondering how to help.

Yep :) I mean, I'm probably still going to see the Hunger Games movie in March, because I've been waiting so long, but otherwise? I can manage without for 4 weeks

Oops, already ordered DVDs. But apart from Sherlock I have nothing to buy.

I think it's more 'don't order in March'. If we can get just a good deal of people to do this, imagine how much their numbers would drop - it would really be sending a message.

Oh, right! Shouldn't have skipped the rest. I read that bit where it talks about the quarter and thought the not-buying was about the whole quarter, not just the last month of it.
Oh, that's good, that means I can buy the Sherlock soundtracks without feeling guilty.

But....but..... Hunger Games comes out in March!! And if it flops at the box office I don't trust the Hollywood execs to put two and two together. They'll just say, "Oh, I guess no one's interested, so we won't bother filming Catching Fire now." Idiot Hollywood people. *grumble grumble*

Oh, I'll still be going to see THG, but that's all :) I've been waiting too long for that movie!

Yeah, sure, it might effect it, but right now... yeah, I am very engaged in this, especially as it seems like something akin to it might one day be passed over here in Europe. I think it goes directly against human rights to have censorship like this.

On an interesting note, my brother has been reading the full text bill at www.opencongress.org. According to the bits that he's managed to read (in short bursts before his eyeballs start bleeding--go legalese) the bill seems to be directed at foreign websites. So people not in the US, you aren't safe either. Opencongress.org has the complete text of the bill, along with companies that are supporting/opposing, and representatives who are supporting/opposing, and a money trail that allows you to see which representatives have received what from lobbyists.

Oh god, I didn't know that. How fucking great -.- plus we have our own almost-SOPA over here called ACTA, which they are keeping secret from everyone. Only Holland has declared that they won't work on it anymore as long as it's being kept secret, everyone else is saying 'screw the public'.

It is honestly making me a bit paranoid
