Summary: Spoilers, highlight to read: Gwen, after her banishment, offered comfort from a stranger.
”Got any family left, kid?” the man’s voice is gruff but not exactly unkind: more lecturing than anything else, and while Gwen doesn’t quite appreciate being called a ’kid’, she understands why the sight of her in her muddied clothes would make anyone feel over-protective.
It doesn’t lessen the pain that explodes in her chest at his words.
No, she thinks. I don’t. My mother died when I was little. My brother abandoned us. My father was killed by the king.
Yes, she thinks. Yes, I do. My brother came back for me. I had the most wonderful friend, growing up. I met this amazing, loyal boy. And I fell in love with the most extraordinary man.
”No,” she says and thinks of Morgana’s knife gleaming in the dark, of Elyan’s accusing eyes, of Merlin’s silence and of Arthur’s yelling. ”I don’t have anyone left.”
She tightens her grip on the cloak around her shoulder, chin raised.
”But I’m fine.”
The man nods, and lets her step back out into the pouring rain.
She can manage on her own.
