I'm not sure what happened. I was sitting in the train watching 2x07 (Show me the Money) and this just hit me while Marian and Robin were talking. I think theres something very wrong with my brain that I'm twisting it like this - maybe its the side-effect of watching the entire third season in one go this week. It messes with your head people! (though PJ is lovely)

Title:
Rightness Toll
Characters: Robin/Marian (yes, I'm surprised as well, but it's angst, so...)
Genre: Angst. Nothing but angst.
Word-count: 328 (without the quote)
Warnings: Spoilers for 2x13. You know what
Summary: Robin looks back and sees the dark irony in something Marian once said to him
Disclaimer: I don't own Robin Hood. If I did, very different character would have been killed off throughout it.

Rightness Toll

”I said you were gorgeous. I meant it.”
“And I meant what I said. One day you will pay, Robin of Locksley.”

-          Robin & Marian ‘Show me the Money’

Duty.

That was the excuse he’d used when she’d asked him why, all those years ago. Why he had to go. Why he was leaving her. Why he was abandoning Locksley.

Truth was, he didn’t know. Not anymore. Because living without her would be the same as living without the faint rustle of leaves in the trees, the sound of birds that woke him in the morning. It would be the same as living without the grass beneath his boots, the bow in his hand, the air in his lungs.

He had just been doing his duty. What he was supposed to do. What everyone should do, really, because it was The Right Thing. And he’d been willing to sacrifice so much, everything, for doing this.

Just not her.

Looking at her grave, knowing her body was there, just beneath the sand, made him feel like all of his old wounds had reopened. Like he was being stabbed - in the back, in the stomach, in the heart – all over again.

He had just been doing his duty to England when he’d left her. And he’d known when he got back, how big a mistake it had been. He had known there would be consequences, but he had never thought that this would be it.

Robin still remembered the time when he’d thought seeing her married to someone else was the greatest pain he would ever know. When jealousy had been eating him up, slow and burning. He wished it was back now, that horrible feeling of abandonment when she made it clear what her decision was. It seemed a fairer punishment; that he should feel as she surely must have felt, when he’d just dropped everything and left.

Her words haunted him. He knew she hadn’t meant it like that, could still hear the teasing tone in her voice. Marian had probably never imagined how her words would come true. In exactly what way he would pay, for doing his godforsaken duty.

Excellent little drabble. I've always wondered what Marian meant by those words and what Robin thought her words meant. Certainly not what turned out. Thank you and welcome to rh fic. I hope you write again.

Thankyou - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that exchange struck a cord. It's also interesting to think about that, technically, he lost her twice in the span of two seasons. Poor Robs :(

I like the way you've skewed this quote, even if it is, as you say, nothing but angst.

Wow, that's so very sad. Interesting take on the quote, and great job.
