I'm just going to leave this here, as it's a brilliant read, written by someone who actually knows what they're talking about:

We Can't be Equal While...

Speaking of females, I've just watched Winters Bone with Jennifer Lawrence: I can definitely recommend it!

technically, we shouldn't take their jokes seriously, but considering that it's 80% of the male population who actually think that a women's place is in the kitchen, well, it just reinforces that.
Yup. But I always fail to explain that to my dad. :)

Ros arrives in 5.1. I can't tell you much about getting lost etc. as I've watched the show in the wrong order. It wasn't a problem for me, as the show has a tendency to quickly move on with things, but I get it if you want to watch it in the normal order. Shame you can't find S3... *mourns Megaupload*

That's kinda why I watch Sanctuary, in spite of it being not-so-good, the main character is simply awesome, and there is such a girl-power vibe, which is refreshing indeed. I'll try to find some streams for Buffy. :)

I'll figure something out :) now that I have to wait for Downton Abbey S3, I'm going to start watching Torchwood tonight, if I can find a dl link!

What's Sanctuary about???

I have a link with online videos that I sometimes use for Buffy's: it has all the episodes. It works most of the time, just keep pressing the 'free user' and 'watch video now' button :) http://www.tubeplus.me/movie/760674/Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer/season_3/episode_16/Doppelgangland/%22

Aw, Torchwood. Reminds me I never watched all of S1. I'd love to read your thoughts, I always thought it was not-so-great but very endearing at the same time. :)

Hmm, it's a supernatural show about a 150 years-old woman who runs a network of 'sanctuaries' for abnormal beings (supernatural creatures) so she can study and protect them. Then there is her ex-lover/nemesis John, her team, the enemies, blah-blah-blah. What bothers me is that a lot of eps are useless fillers, and while half the cast is amazing, the other is meh. But Amanda Tapping is brilliant and it's got something endearing as well, I can't explain why. =)

Oh, thanks! I'm memming the link.

I'm thinking John Barrowman and Eve Myles are pretty enough to look at for it not to be a total disaster ;D

That sounds quite intriquing! I might have to check it out... when I'm 40 and done with all the other shows xD

That's a very good reason to watch. *nods*

Actually, I think you might like it! I'm just super picky about everything I watch. :)
Ikr, my to-watch list is getting bigger by the day, and what do I do? I re-watch Spooks and Tennant!Who. *facepalm*

Haha, I do the exact same! I've been rewatching some of the earlier, happier episodes of Supernatural, because right now everything in S5 is crushing my soul. DA's christmas special helped though!

I liked the first episode of Torchwood :) I like that it has a very different tone than DW; it's not gallivanting through time and space, it's protecting the Earth with much more limited resources - sometimes even from its own inhabitants. And I think Ianto owns my soul already!

It's a completely different tone, yes, and it has that special atmosphere that I like, in spite of the ups-and-downs of the plots. Ianto! <3

I watched the first ten minutes of Buffy last night (then the stream got too slow). I think I'm going to like it! I feel silly because it was the show my classmates watched when we were 9 and I didn't, and I'm watching it now. But whatever. :)

I'll probably marathon it this/next week (I'm at ep3 now) while I'm sick in bed anyway, so review of all of season 1 should be up soon! ;)

I just realized I gave you a link to a S3 episode, I hope you didn't start there! ;D despite the heavy 90' feels of the first few seasons and the not-always-great effects, it really is one of the most amazing shows out there, both in terms of characters, plots, acting and amazingly witty dialouge. Plus, Anthony Head!!

Now you know how I feel with most British shows, compared to everyone else xD

Aw, you're sick? Hope you'll feel better soon!

Nah, I went back to 1.1 like a big girl. ;)I don't mind the 90's feel, not at all, it just makes me laugh because of the 'American high-school' elements, but I don't mind. Can't wait to see Anthony Head!

Well, I only really started with British shows in 2008/2009. :)

Thanks! It's just a mild cough, so I'll be alright soon :)

Ah, good xD didn't mean to sound patronizing! It is fun to poke fun of a lot of the American high-school tropes that presents itself. Seriously, some of their outfits are hideous!

Still a head-start compared to me xD I started... October last year!

You didn't, don't worry! :) They are hideous, lol. But it was 1997, so I forgive them.

Not RH and Merlin, you were already in the fandom when we started speaking, right? Anyway, better late than never! I used to think British TV was obscure and only the Americans made the good stuff. I came a long way since then! ;P

Hey, yeah, that's right! I'd forgotten about those :D (shame on me). I have always had so much Monty Python in my life that for me British = quality, but it is mainly American shows being broadcasted over here (though DA S2 is currently airing over here!... just when I finished it), so it wasn't until I discovered the wonders of downloading and amazon.co.uk (international shipping, ilu) that I managed to get properly into it!

I'd forgotten about the comedy stuff! And I always watched stuff like Poirot, Marple, Morse, Midsomer Murders etc, but I only got in the recent shows like Spooks, RH or DW when we took the cable channels. I was more into British films than TV shows at first, though there were British shows I watched not knowing they were British (French dubbed *grumbles*). Now 'British' is my filter for 'potentially good'. :P

Lucky you, they've only just aired S1 over here. They were pretty quick on Sherlock though, we got S2 about a month ago, and in English. :D

Ooohh me too! Midsomer Murder is like family-tradition. We have to watch it whenever its on :) and the old Granade Sherlock Holmes series as well!

Now 'British' is my filter for 'potentially good'.
Sometimes I get a bit worried about this; for example with Doctor Who - I don't put it to the same standards that I might put other shows. Maybe it's because its aimed for kids, but British television in general... I just have a much easier time forgiving them being lame, than I do American (and Danish for that matter).

They haven't aired Sherlock here yet at all (as far as I know) :/ but I got my dvd a couple of weeks ago, so yay! :D

Your family is like my family set in Denmark! :P

Hmm, I don't know. I went on and on with the rants about Spooks S9 and 10 or Doctor Who S6 etc. so I don't think I'm more forgiving. The big difference is, in spite of all the flaws, these shows have vibes that make them all unique, and I get to really care about some characters. There are some American shows I watch and like, but they can feel 'generic' in comparison.

Lol! Time to search for our American counterpart?? :D

It does vary with the show, I think: like Buffy I tend to forgive almost everything, because I grew up with it, but I am extremely critical of Moffat's run of DW. I think it's because of the sometimes very limited view American shows seems to have + everyone on US television is pretty (well, nearly everyone). It bugs me; there is much more variety in British; you have main-characters that actually look like people, and not barbies and ken dolls. It's easier for me to enjoy, because it's easier to relate (does that make any sense?)

Haha, I actually have distant family in America (immigration and all that). Let's put an add somewhere 'family of minds looking for its estranged members' or something. :P

Yeah, sentimental attachement counts. I know I'm perhaps not entirely objective when it comes to RTD/Moffat, for example.

Oh, exactly. I love Brit TV for that. Ruth and Ros in Spooks, or Catherine Tate and Louise Brealey are easy to identify with because I could be them, they don't come straight for Pretty Dolls Land, even if they're pretty ladies!

'family of minds looking for its estranged members' or something.
Haha, we should come up with a cool new last name. Like Crawley. Or Alonzo. or Dumbledore!

Honestly, the more I watch the show, the more beautiful these people become: because they're interesting, and not flat, and their personalities sort of shine on their face in the end.

I second Crawley and Dumbledore. ;)

Oh, exactly. I've stopped counting the times where I've discovered a new actor, thought 'he's not very attractive, but he can bloody well act' and three months later I have this massive crush and I can't remember why I ever found him/her not handsome. But that's because of their personalities, voices etc.

When I saw Benedict Cumberbatch on television for the first time, the first words out of my mouth were; 'his face looks weird'. His face looks weird!!!! Today I'd die from joy if I was ever in the same room as him!

Same happened to me with David Tennant (and many other actors). It's a bit weird with Cumberbatch, because I always found him very attractive, just not when he's in character as Sherlock. :P

Oh, I find him attractive either way tbh xD and I always thought DT was the most gorgeous man on the planet (and... the first time I saw him was in Harry Potter. Clearly there is something very wrong with me)

It's the same with Mark Gatiss. He is absolutely stunning, because his personality is so perfect

Oh, DT is gorgeous, and v. attractive in HP, nothing wrong with you. ;) I guess I was just too mesmerized by his acting to notice at first. Now I think he's one of the sexiest men alive. It's like I focus on the acting first, and then I notice the looks. I did the same thing with RA in Spooks!

Gatiss is on that list too now. It's funny, because I saw him in so many things and didn't realise it was the same guy until I looked at his filmography. Had the shock of my life when I saw he was the alien in DW 6.13. :P At first I thought he wasn't good-looking, but now I think he's got a lot of charm and a lovely voice. Funny how perception changes!

Bwah, I'll have to admit to incredible shallowness here and say that I notice the looks first xD but it doesn't stop me from wanting to learn more if I at first don't find them physically attractive: on the contrary. I hated Brad Pitt with a burning passion for years because I only saw him in 'Golden Boy' roles, but then I saw him in Twelve Monkeys and found out that he really could act!

Gatiss is a chameleon. It's scary!

Gosh, same about Brad Pitt. I've hated him for years. I think better of him now I've seen him in recent films, I think he's gotten a lot better lately!

True, I saw him in tons of things, and he always looked so different. From period drama to Midsomer Murders to Being Human... I've yet to see him in purely comic stuff. :)
