I'm just going to leave this here, as it's a brilliant read, written by someone who actually knows what they're talking about:

We Can't be Equal While...

Speaking of females, I've just watched Winters Bone with Jennifer Lawrence: I can definitely recommend it!

Eek. I had a long argument with my dad over this the other day, but there are just some things he won't hear. He keeps telling me 'if you don't stop being so agressive [about sexist jokes etc.] you're going to turn guys down'. And I say 'I don't give a fuck'.
I think the solution is treating men the way they treat us, say 'you're an arsehole' when we think they behave like arseholes and stop feeling ashamed/guilty about everything we do. It's damn hard, but let's just be ourselves and say 'fuck it'.

I think I've seen you around in the Robin Hood fandom, but we've never spoken.
Thank you! =) I always took these issues very seriously, perhaps a bit too much. About what you said in your comment about hope, I completely agree. I think my generation has evolved already, I'm sure that if we keep fighting for it, we'll achieve equality someday. And like you said, it will be a positive thing for men as well as women. =)

I am considered the 'scary feminist' in my class and social circles, but the problem is that I'm not even extreme: it's that no-one else really cares. Granted, it's not at all as bad in Denmark as it probably is in USA (for example the whole chivalry-thing: you don't really see boys becoming annoyed when girls hold doors open for them. Here it's considered normal courtsey that the first one out the door holds it open for the next ones, no matter the gender). I tend to scold my dad a lot for sexist-jokes, and it might seem silly because he is one of the least sexist people alive (like, seriously. Even the thought of him being all 'women can't do the job' makes me laugh for hours) and he only makes them knowing that they're stupid and silly, but it's still reinforcing stupid stereotypes, so even said in fun it can easily be taken the wrong way by someone who really is misogynist.

I think Joss Whedon (writer of among others, Buffy) says it best:

Q: Why do you write strong, female characters?
Whedon: Because you're still asking me that question

Oh, my dad isn't sexist either, neither is my granddad and he's from the previous generation. They're the ones to wash the dishes, do the grocery shopping etc. :) But idk, even if they tell sexist jokes in order to mock them, which is how they do it, it still annoys me that they tell them at all. It that very weird? Sometimes I think I go to far, but my reactions are epidermic, I'm just like that.

This quote is perfect, seriously. You have to watch the Spooks eps with Ros Myers and read some of the meta that's been written about her, it's exactly the same principle. She's the absolute fictional role-model to me. And I need to watch some Buffy. Thank God for writers who create those characters and make mentalities change!

See, I love things like that! When they first moved in together, my mother couldn't cook to save her life, so my dad did that. Granted, now she mostly cooks, but that's because his work is out-of-town so he's home later. It also reminds me that my great-grandad (on my dad's side) used to cook as well, and back then everyone thought it was so weird, but it means my grandfather and my dad grew up with those principles. And which is also why, technically, we shouldn't take their jokes seriously, but considering that it's 80% of the male population who actually think that a women's place is in the kitchen, well, it just reinforces that. So I'm with you: better an overreaction than no reaction at all, to something that has to change.

I've been searching fruitlessly for Spooks S3 downloads/online vids, but I found a few for S6 (I think). Will I be completely lost if I start from there? And when does Ros get in?

You really, really have to watch Buffy: it's almost entirely female-dominated, and all of the females are ones with the biggest power. The only two male-figures who are fixed throughout the entire show are 'normal' people, which is such a nice and refreshing change!

Yup. But I always fail to explain that to my dad. :)

Ros arrives in 5.1. I can't tell you much about getting lost etc. as I've watched the show in the wrong order. It wasn't a problem for me, as the show has a tendency to quickly move on with things, but I get it if you want to watch it in the normal order. Shame you can't find S3... *mourns Megaupload*

That's kinda why I watch Sanctuary, in spite of it being not-so-good, the main character is simply awesome, and there is such a girl-power vibe, which is refreshing indeed. I'll try to find some streams for Buffy. :)

I'll figure something out :) now that I have to wait for Downton Abbey S3, I'm going to start watching Torchwood tonight, if I can find a dl link!

What's Sanctuary about???

I have a link with online videos that I sometimes use for Buffy's: it has all the episodes. It works most of the time, just keep pressing the 'free user' and 'watch video now' button :) http://www.tubeplus.me/movie/760674/Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer/season_3/episode_16/Doppelgangland/%22

Aw, Torchwood. Reminds me I never watched all of S1. I'd love to read your thoughts, I always thought it was not-so-great but very endearing at the same time. :)

Hmm, it's a supernatural show about a 150 years-old woman who runs a network of 'sanctuaries' for abnormal beings (supernatural creatures) so she can study and protect them. Then there is her ex-lover/nemesis John, her team, the enemies, blah-blah-blah. What bothers me is that a lot of eps are useless fillers, and while half the cast is amazing, the other is meh. But Amanda Tapping is brilliant and it's got something endearing as well, I can't explain why. =)

Oh, thanks! I'm memming the link.

Haha, I do the exact same! I've been rewatching some of the earlier, happier episodes of Supernatural, because right now everything in S5 is crushing my soul. DA's christmas special helped though!

I liked the first episode of Torchwood :) I like that it has a very different tone than DW; it's not gallivanting through time and space, it's protecting the Earth with much more limited resources - sometimes even from its own inhabitants. And I think Ianto owns my soul already!

It's a completely different tone, yes, and it has that special atmosphere that I like, in spite of the ups-and-downs of the plots. Ianto! <3

I watched the first ten minutes of Buffy last night (then the stream got too slow). I think I'm going to like it! I feel silly because it was the show my classmates watched when we were 9 and I didn't, and I'm watching it now. But whatever. :)

I'll probably marathon it this/next week (I'm at ep3 now) while I'm sick in bed anyway, so review of all of season 1 should be up soon! ;)

I just realized I gave you a link to a S3 episode, I hope you didn't start there! ;D despite the heavy 90' feels of the first few seasons and the not-always-great effects, it really is one of the most amazing shows out there, both in terms of characters, plots, acting and amazingly witty dialouge. Plus, Anthony Head!!

Now you know how I feel with most British shows, compared to everyone else xD

Nah, I went back to 1.1 like a big girl. ;)I don't mind the 90's feel, not at all, it just makes me laugh because of the 'American high-school' elements, but I don't mind. Can't wait to see Anthony Head!

Well, I only really started with British shows in 2008/2009. :)

Ah, good xD didn't mean to sound patronizing! It is fun to poke fun of a lot of the American high-school tropes that presents itself. Seriously, some of their outfits are hideous!

Still a head-start compared to me xD I started... October last year!

You didn't, don't worry! :) They are hideous, lol. But it was 1997, so I forgive them.

Not RH and Merlin, you were already in the fandom when we started speaking, right? Anyway, better late than never! I used to think British TV was obscure and only the Americans made the good stuff. I came a long way since then! ;P

Hey, yeah, that's right! I'd forgotten about those :D (shame on me). I have always had so much Monty Python in my life that for me British = quality, but it is mainly American shows being broadcasted over here (though DA S2 is currently airing over here!... just when I finished it), so it wasn't until I discovered the wonders of downloading and amazon.co.uk (international shipping, ilu) that I managed to get properly into it!

I'd forgotten about the comedy stuff! And I always watched stuff like Poirot, Marple, Morse, Midsomer Murders etc, but I only got in the recent shows like Spooks, RH or DW when we took the cable channels. I was more into British films than TV shows at first, though there were British shows I watched not knowing they were British (French dubbed *grumbles*). Now 'British' is my filter for 'potentially good'. :P

Lucky you, they've only just aired S1 over here. They were pretty quick on Sherlock though, we got S2 about a month ago, and in English. :D

Ooohh me too! Midsomer Murder is like family-tradition. We have to watch it whenever its on :) and the old Granade Sherlock Holmes series as well!

Now 'British' is my filter for 'potentially good'.
Sometimes I get a bit worried about this; for example with Doctor Who - I don't put it to the same standards that I might put other shows. Maybe it's because its aimed for kids, but British television in general... I just have a much easier time forgiving them being lame, than I do American (and Danish for that matter).

They haven't aired Sherlock here yet at all (as far as I know) :/ but I got my dvd a couple of weeks ago, so yay! :D

Your family is like my family set in Denmark! :P

Hmm, I don't know. I went on and on with the rants about Spooks S9 and 10 or Doctor Who S6 etc. so I don't think I'm more forgiving. The big difference is, in spite of all the flaws, these shows have vibes that make them all unique, and I get to really care about some characters. There are some American shows I watch and like, but they can feel 'generic' in comparison.

Good post there! I'm ashamed whenever I see a list over countries that haven't had a female president yet. Sweden is one of them. It makes me furious every day. That's one of the things.

The points the post made about women 'mustn't be too aggressive because...' (which also [livejournal.com profile] the_silverdoe writes about) is also very good and true. What I also like is that the post brings forward that gender equality is for BOTH men and women; both sexes benefit from it.

Don't keep calm and fight on. :-) Sorry if I sound too cheerful, but the fact that young people take these issues seriously (more seriously than we did in my time) makes me so happy. It gives me great hope!

I am proud to say that we have our first female head of state over here! The fact that she doesn't seem to do a much better job than her predececcors is another matter entirely, and has nothing to do with her gender -.-

the post brings forward that gender equality is for BOTH men and women; both sexes benefit from it.
Exactly! This might just be my opinion, but a lot of political parties over here wants to have it so that for example the board of a big company has to have at least X number of women there. Like how Hollywood-movies have to have at least X number of coloured people on-screen. To me, that seems more sexist/racist than the opposite: isn't it unfair that you've gotten a job because of your skin-colour/gender? Shouldn't we instead encourage people to work harder, become better, regardless of the way most of the world views stuff like that? If everyone knows that a woman has only gotten the job because she's female, how are they going to take her seriously? How does that help her career at all? Yes, it's not fair that she has to work harder, but then do that and prove everyone wrong, and fight until one day, future generations of women don't have to and are, in fact, equal.

There was this huge fuss about it, and now that we have equal voting-rights, people are all: 'ah, good enough'. It makes me very mad as well, especially because no-one over here takes me seriously when I start talking about it
